Paying Homage to Tradition with Raiatea Helm
November 12, 2011
Honolulu, HI
The preeminent Hawaiian songstress of this generation, Raiatea Helm, is joining the Royal Hawaiian Band in presenting an evening of music and dance. Her lilting voice combines beautifully with the wind ensemble to pay homage to traditional Hawaiian music and the legacy that the band perpetuates. Seen here, she confers with Bandmaster Bright at a recent rehearsal along with another picture of one of the songs she will perform.
Raitea will be performing with the Royal HawaiianBand at the Farrington High School Auditorium Tuesday Nov 22.
How many songs will she sing from her new CD "Sea of Love?" Hopefully enough to get people off their chairs, said Raiatea Helm, who’ll perform a special concert at Chai’s Island Bistro on November 17.
Released last month, Helm’s new album harkens back to the music widely heard in nightclubs and times of pre- and post-statehood in the 1950s and 1960s. It’s a sound that hasn’t been harmonized - let alone performed live - in more than five decades. Referring to it as the genre of old "Hawaiian Club," Helm said it’s the music that her parents and grandparents grew up with in the cocktail lounges of Waikiki.

Raiatea's New Album Sea of Love Arrives October 4, 2011
September, 2011
Honolulu, HI
Twice-Grammy® nominated international Hawaiian recording star, Raiatea Helm adds to her list of award-winning music with the release of her long-awaited solo CD Sea of Love. As a courageous "new traditionalist" of Hawaiian music, Raiatea Helm’s collection of songs in Sea of Love takes the musical stylings of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s and makes them fresh through vibrant, innovative arrangements. This collection of songs draws upon the signature sounds of a bygone era in Waikiki and captures the sizzle of brushes on a snare drum and ‘sock’ cymbal, the use of maracas, congas and bongos, and the uplifting rhythms of the vibraphones, the bass, the steel guitar, and the piano. When Raiatea Helm’s sparkling vocals are placed within the energy of this effervescent instrumentation, she breathes new life to songs from a by-gone era that were once performed throughout Waikiki and known simply as "Hawaiian Club" music.

I will always cherish the memory Kumu Charles Kale Ka'upu as a warm and gentle soul with whom I had the privilege of making and sharing music. Kumu was loved by so many he became a treasure of what it means to be Hawaiian. Kumu Charles was deep and powerful in voice as well as spirit. But he was also quick to laugh and at a times uncontrollably sassy. I love him as so many others do. And then in other ways that are my own. May you rest and fly with our ku-puna. Love you always, Raiatea.

Hawaiian blossoms: Raiatea Helm, local hula dancers, magical music
May 11, 2011
SF Gate, San Francisco
For Northern Californians who don't appreciate the current chill in the air, tonight offers a chance to bask in the warmth of some of Hawai'i's most beautiful music -- a way to stop and smell the loke in our busy lives on the Mainland.
That's because Raiatea Helm, featured in this blog yesterday, follows last night's stellar performance at intimate Club Fox in Redwood City with a sure-to-be equally engaging show tonight at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. The East Bay gig also provides the opportunity to hear new music from opening act Kawika Alfiche, South San Francisco's multitalented kumu hula whose second album ("Kale'a") was released this spring; he'll be accompanied by dancers from his Halau O Keikiali'i.
In the immortal words of Credence Clearwater Revival; "Oh Lord! stuck in Lodi again!" Haha! H-U-G-E Mahalos! to the the THREE M's - Mu'umu'u Heaven for this beautiful dress, Maui Jim for the "Rainbow Falls" sunglasses, Margo Tahitian Pearls for the gorgeous silver white pearls and Chao's Fruit Stand for the "Sweetest Strawberries in Lodi!"
High note: Raiatea Helm's musical trip to Old Hawai'i
May 10, 2011
SF Gate, San Francisco
The last time Raiatea Helm, the sweet yet sultry 26-year-old Hawaiian falsetto and jazz singer, performed in the Bay Area, a power outage forced her to turn the first show at Yoshi's into an acoustic set, and to cancel the second. Yet that's nothing compared to her last time on tour in Japan (where her fan base may be even larger than that in Hawai'i.) Helm was supposed to be playing in Fukushima on March 11, the day of the cataclysmic earthquake and tsunami, but due to a last-minute schedule change she was still in Tokyo and survived the shaking unscathed.
The Merrie Monarch was last week and a few people know I danced at the Merrie Monarch Festival for 3 years with Auntie Moana's halau from Moloka'i! I guess that inspired me to dance a hula in one of my new beautiful MENA dresses. Thank you MENA for your support!
