Mana Maoli – Hawaiʻi ʻ78 Music Video

Hawaiʻi ’78, written forty years ago and made famous by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, also known as IZ, is a song that demonstrates the continued fight in which our people have experienced through time. With the words, “Ua mau ke ʻea o ka ʻāina i ka pono” (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness), it is a reminder of who we were, are and strive to become.  In this video, Mana Maoli expresses through the many voices as well as the many hands of dedicated people to support what is evident to our sovereignty as Hawaiians.

I am truly humbled to be a part of this movement. Mahalo (thanks) to Mana Maoli for making the truth known to the world and for doing what is pono (right). It is an exciting time for us, as we continue to see and face the repercussions, we must celebrate the triumphs in which our kūpuna (ancestors) have steered for our people. I am so proud to see this next generation of kanaka (human being) who are genuinely passionate about their identities.

As we move forward, we are reminded that the work has yet to be finished.  This video is hope for our future, although we will continue to face many challenges, we believe that the keiki (children) will follow in the right footsteps to instill in their children, the importance of who we are as kanaka.

E Ola Mau Ka Pae ʻĀina O Hawaiʻi,
